How Gift Card Systems Work: Behind the Scenes of Seamless Transactions

  • Activation: At the point of sale, the gift card is activated by connecting its unique identifier to the value chosen by the buyer. This process updates the retailer’s database to associate the card’s code with a specific balance, enabling its use.
  • Redemption: When the recipient uses the card, the system verifies its code, checks the balance, and deducts the appropriate amount in real-time.

2. Database Management and Real-Time Processing

At the heart of any gift card system is a robust database that tracks every card’s unique identifier, balance, and transaction history.

When a gift card is redeemed, the system checks this database to ensure the code is valid and the balance is sufficient. This happens almost instantaneously, thanks to real-time processing. Any changes—like partial redemptions or reloading funds—are immediately reflected in the database, ensuring accuracy for both the user and the retailer.

3. Point-of-Sale (POS) Integration
